Wendy McCoole

Wendy McCoole was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 at the age of 42 - the same age her mother was when she was first diagnosed.  To keep friends and family updated as she progressed through her treatments, Wendy kept an online journal affectionately referred to as "Bald Wendy."  There she added chapters and photos so her loved ones could understand how she was doing and so she didn't have to relive each experience with each telling.  Her story was shared and read by hundreds of people - many whom she didn't know – helping her to realize just how important it is to one's ability to heal to stay connected with family and to find others going through something similar.

Wendy McCoole is Executive Director and Founder of BreastCancerStories.com - a free online community where anyone touched by breast cancer can stay in touch with loved ones and with one another while going through treatment.

BreastCancerStories.com provides:

Breast cancer patients with their own unique Web address where they can write and upload diary entries and photos whenever they feel the need to write;

Friends and family members the ability to visit their loved one’s website whenever they want, follow their story, and leave messages of support;

A mechanism for new breast cancer patients to search through an index of stories based on age, location, type of cancer and type of treatment, find someone similar to them and follow their story … helping them to not feel quite so alone.

BreastCancerStories.com is the mechanism that brings both patient and loved one together enabling them to communicate and stay in touch via the Internet, at their own pace. Providing patients, family members, friends and clinicians the ability to read other patients’ experiences helps bridge that gap of uncertainty.
